UPDATE 19 FEB 2021: Monster Catcher v1.3 is out now! This version includes 3 new power ups, cutscenes, and a very sneaky new monster!
UPDATE 6 FEB 2021: Now includes a single load .prg file! Highscore saving may not work in this version, but still works in the .d64 version. Thanks to MOS 8502 for helping me get the single load version across the line.
UPDATE: Monster Catcher v1.2 is out! Improved controls and some bug fixes.
Monster Catcher is a fast action, single player game for the Commodore 64! If you like Rodland, Bubble Bobble, and a little bit of Smash TV then you’ll love Monster Catcher!
Monsters have invaded, and the bunnies are in trouble! Grab your magic wand and use your capture spell to save the day! But careful you don't trap a bunny by mistake!
- Randomly generated levels
- 40 levels plus an end game boss
- 4 different areas
- 9 different enemies with lots of varied behaviours
- 4 different power ups: lightning bolt, magic boost, shield, and extra life.
Joystick in port 2.
Works on PAL C64 hardware and emulators like Vice. Also works on TheC64 Mini and Maxi - thanks to Arcade Ren for letting me know!

This game is so much fun. Thank you!
Thanks so much! Glad you're enjoying it.
The end-boss after 40 levels is way to brutal. There's no indication when it will fire and which direction.
There is a pattern, but luck is way to much calculated in it :)
Thanks for the feedback! Do you think a progress save after each area would be a good solution? I may not have enough code memory left to implement that but I can try.
BTW - tips for the boss: it changes left/right direction when it hits the edge of the screen, it moves up or down at those turns to get closer to the player, and it only shoots when you are far away from it. The trick to defeating is to stick close, fire at it when it swaps direction, then run to the other side of it and repeat. :)
Awesome, thanks for the tips :)
To be honest, I used some savestates in the emulators I use. I mainly use my psp, ps vita and thec64 mini/maxi. Maybe some old skool password system, could be an option?
Without savestates I would not make it through level 37, that one took me several runs :)
Yeah I figured emulator save states would be used by most. I also used the excuse of how hard games were back in the 80s to justify it! But it would be a better game with something built in. I managed to defeat the whole game on a single play through just once so I thought at least it is achievable. 😅
Enjoyable game. :) Worth the money.
The cracks list 2 bugs: Faulty highscore detection and borked ending. Bugfix?
